While your garage’s ceiling might not be a priority as you adjust the space within, we believe it should be! After all, where in your home can you use the ceiling space for storage without the whole place becoming an eyesore? Whether you are hoping to just get some more storage space, want to improve the efficiency, or you want to use your garage as something other than just a standard garage, we can help—and using your ceiling space might be a great way to get started.

Improving the Efficiency

If you want to remodel the space in your garage in order to both improve the appearance and to use the garage space for parking your car with enough space not to be concerned, then the ceiling is the first place you should look for room. Many interior designers recommend beginning to store up rather than out, and the garage is no exception. You can attach a variety of hooks, shelves, and racks to hold everything from skis to canoes, to bikes, to holiday decorations, and anything else you can really imagine.

The key to this is to begin with a strong foundation. If you are adding hooks and shelves in an unfinished area, then you will want to add blocking between the trusses where you will be storing your items. This is also a good time to think about adding insulation to make the space feel better during the winter months, especially if you like to work on projects in the garage. If you already have drywall in your garage, then there will be space for shelves to attach to a floor or ceiling joist. However, not all of these joists can accommodate every layout.

Workshop Space

If you want a wood or automotive workshop to be the center of your garage space, then you will need a ceiling that can both hold what you need up above as well as add light to your workspace. Many people consider metal ceilings for this. The bonus? They are easy to install and don’t require any sanding or painting!

Rocking Out Space

If you or your kids are in a band, or perhaps you work on loud weekend projects that often involve a saw, it might be time to consider being a little more courteous to your neighbors. Think about adding some soundproofing materials, such as cork board, in the ceiling and the walls. You can also create a drop ceiling with acoustic tiles. That way, you won’t need to worry about the neighbors calling you angrily at midnight when you get carried away by your latest handyman project.
